Zero waste Master class

Doesn't that sound fancy? A master class, in reducing waste. I wanted to shout out to those in the local area, about an event coming up on 20 June. It's a Wednesday, at 6pm.

Here's a link for more information. Tickets cost the change out of $12. A pretty reasonable price, for a Master class.

No personal affiliation - okay, maybe a little. The Source in Toowoomba, is my favourite place to bulk-buy foods and reduce packaging.

 Shhh...I get loyalty points

I slipped them my email, and they mentioned the Masterclass, in one of them. But I still pay full price for my goods. Unless I use my loyalty card. Yeah, but everyone has one of those. So no extra concessions.

I guess there's nothing to see here, but someone who is excited to reduce waste. Do you have a favourite store/local merchant, to shop for bulk supplies?

  1. Chris that should be a great workshop. I won't be back home in time to go. I can buy lots in bulk from Birdsong Market Garden at a really good price. Enjoy the masterclass.

    1. I have to see if I'm well enough to go. I've been hit by a loogie! It's been about week, or is it, two now? I forget. The kids had it before me, and one is still recovering. So it seems like it's been around forever. If I'm well enough, I'll go. :)

    2. Forgot to ask, is that just fruit and veg you buy from BMG, or other stuff? Do you make an order and pick it up, or can you pop in any time to see what they have?

    3. Chris, I think Racheal has the opening times on the website but just email her and she will let you know. They mainly have veggies but are now getting apples from Stanthorpe as well. There are also nuts, chia seeds, etc with cheaper prices than The Source.

    4. Nanna Chel, you've encouraged me to check them out now. I thought they only sold veg, but if they're getting the other stuff you mentioned, then I'm in!

  2. Will be interested to see how it goes. Master Class sounds very grand!

The only bulk place I have near me is the No-Knead bread shop. The proprietor runs no -knead bread-making classes and my husband and I did them many years ago. He used to make the bread and I went along for the ride, but ended up making it myself. Unfortunately they only sell flours and grains and bread-making stuff. I would like somewhere to buy other grains and pulses and dried fruit, etc, but the supermarkets have got the game sown up.

    1. Supermarkets had the same deal here too. Then one organic shop opened up, and got a few staples in bulk. Then another shop opened nearby (The Source) which did a lot more staples and specialised in bulk buying - as opposed to a sideline, the original organic shop had. Both are still good shops.

It's taken about 7-8 years or so, to get this kind of choice though. So maybe it will be on the cards in your area, one day too. I know The Source is a franchise, and noted there were several shops in Victoria (Balaclava, Berwick, Brunswick, Camberwell, Fitzroy, Geelong, Hampton, Prahran, Moonee Ponds) and there's a shop opening in Eltham soon.

Great to still have the No-Knead bread shop, in your location though. If you can source locally ground flour, the health benefits are fantastic!

  3. I can buy in bulk from a little combined organic/chemical free grocery and butcher. They have a good range of basics, like flours and sugars, in their bulk bins. I buy cheaper cuts of meat from their little butchery sometimes too. They have a loyalty card and when it's full it's worth a $20 discount. Meg

    1. It's exciting to hear the other places people can go, Meg. A good butcher is a good thing! Gotta love those loyalty cards too. ;)

  4. All bulk stores are over an hour for us so we keep doing all we can to produce...all we can. I'm not above asking when I see someone throwing away canned for "it's expired" clothing or other treasures and my three sisters do a great job of saving bags, egg cartons, all kinds of stuff for me. So much waste in the USA. It is embarrassing.

    1. You're doing a great job of providing food for yourselves. Hasn't the drier conditions been a challenge though? I've noticed a lot of places in the US, feeling the effects of less rainfall. That's normally "my" thing, and I was always grateful the rain was falling somewhere else. But not apparently, this year.
