The reason I'm avoiding it in spring, is the fear it could reduce flowering with reduced light. It's going to be a balancing act though, as I don't quite know how spring will pan out. If summer arrives early, I'll have to whip out the shade cloth.

I like your idea about letting weeds go to seed, as an act of rebellion, lol. ;) Chris https://www.blogger.com/profile/13715819899708384147noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8284944855633609232.post-8218586652437388422015-10-14T22:15:55.892+10:002015-10-14T22:15:55.892+10:00I agree regarding having the right trees around gr...I agree regarding having the right trees around growth. In our area, trees draw up water so planting guilds around them seems okay. Even our black walnut which supposedly won't allow other things to grow near it, always a guild of sorts. I am wondering why you don't just use a shade cloth in bed 4 though. I know you want to see what happens and you have your own goals of course. Everything looks great too. I do pull some weeds myself-some are just space hogs and that is the reason I pull. I let some of them go to seed since I have found that they are edible however and honestly, with all the gmo around us, I feel that letting things go to seed is an act of rebellion. lol. . Because there's so much to learn and admire. :)

I'm certainly hoping I can manage the weeds on this site. By continually plucking the tops, like a herbivore would, and not disturbing the soil, I know it will reduce the weeds next year. Unfortunately I have a big backyard (like you) and there are always weeds flowering somewhere. When they blow in, or like Cobblers Pegs, come in by sticking to your clothes, its an impossible war to win.

With persistence and more plants added though, I hope to turn the tide eventually. :)Chris https://www.blogger.com/profile/13715819899708384147noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8284944855633609232.post-46553637335931793902015-10-08T17:32:15.124+10:002015-10-08T17:32:15.124+10:00Thanks Phil, the layout is in relation to the the ...Thanks Phil, the layout is in relation to the the site. Most of it is flat and straight, with some curves to match the retaining wall. I'd love to say I planned it all in advance, but like so many things, it evolves as we find a need to use the land. Paying attention to what the plants are doing though, is influencing the design even more.

So much so, I have plans for another avocado tree! :)Chris https://www.blogger.com/profile/13715819899708384147noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8284944855633609232.post-62856393404866922692015-10-08T16:46:32.209+10:002015-10-08T16:46:32.209+10:00Not only a well-ordered mind, but an ability to re...Not only a well-ordered mind, but an ability to read nature and learn from what you're seeing. Not many gardeners can do that. I've lost count of the number of times I've explained to people that if you leave weeds to flower, set and drop seed, then you'll have more of the same the following year. They think I'm some sort of all-knowing god, when all it is is observation and common sense.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8284944855633609232.post-53467985514120295942015-10-07T16:07:41.628+10:002015-10-07T16:07:41.628+10:00A well laid out vegetable garden is a delight - li...A well laid out vegetable garden is a delight - like your one. You obviously have a well ordered mind as it shows in your design of the bedspoggeauxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00754636457782658089noreply@blogger.com
