Firsts

It has been a month since my last post, but it was to be expected. As I had immersed myself in a paid, online art course, for a whole month. It finally concluded. Simultaneously however, there was another big change we had to adjust to, as a family.

A big day for Peter, arrived. Somewhat like...

His first day, coming home to the bush...

His first day, as a super hero...

To finally, his first day of school!

Yes, he started school this year! Oh my. Big changes. I wasn't going to embarrass him today though (or his big sister) by dragging out the camera, to immortalise his first day on the school bus. I'm a little nervous for him, because the bus and getting to school, is a huge responsibility. It's no small feat.

Living where we do in the bush, the bus has to come early. Everyone out the door, by 7am! His bus arrives at school, an hour and a half, before school starts. There's a time, they must sit in a supervised area, and a time they go and play.

I'm a little nervous, because he has to remember to put his bag, outside his classroom, before he goes and plays. The rest of his day - from getting his lunch to finding his library bag to return his book, hinges on him putting it in the right place. I've been showing him for the past month where it is, and he still gets a little confused. Today, is the deep end of the pool though.

Yikes, it's hard, letting these little ones, go. Growing up is automatic! Ensuring they can find their way, is what pulls at the heartstrings. I look forward to hearing about his day, when dad brings him home, this afternoon!

In the meantime, there's plenty to keep me busy - outside and inside. I look forward to blogging a little more regularly, again.

  1. Dear me, 7am is early, Chris. I used to think 7.30am was bad when the bus came that early at one stage. I am sure he will be fine but tired after his big day. Hope you aren't feeling too lost :-)

    1. It is a long day for such little peeps, but his sister has been doing it for 8 years now. Oh my, don't the years just float by! I kept busy, mostly, but there were definitely days I stood around like a stunned mullet. Just until my system rebooted, to the new normal. :)

  2. You sound as nervous as he probably is. It will be fine. We always tend to amplify our fears. Enjoy hearing about his day. He looks great in the photo.

    1. Happy to report, all went well. I caved-in at morning tea however, and called the school to check he'd put his bag in the right place, lol. The only thing which seemed to have disturbed him, is when his sister put him on the second bus. They go to different schools, so there's a bus transfer, mid way. He was sad to see his sister go.

  3. My two had 7am bus starts. They both managed and both did well. Your little fellow looks so cute in his big school uniform. He is going to have a wonderful day. What and adventure!

    1. So you know the joy of the seven o'clock, bus run. ;) At least it was an option, for both of us. They do seem to get used to it, over time. Thanks about the photo. I may be biased, but I think he's cute too.

  4. Gosh, Town kids have it easy don't they? They get dropped at their classroom by mum who organizes everything for them, almost doing the thinking for them. But how amazing to hear of the way it is for real country kids. Your young man will learn to stand on his feet and think for himself so much quicker than Town kids. You have prepared him well Chris, and watch him develop in leaps and bounds. What a great smile he has. :-)

    1. I sometimes daydream, how much easier it would be for the commute to school, if we lived closer to town. But I wouldn't like the rest of the fast pace of city living. We're fortunate to live where we do, and make a few sacrifices, to make it possible. The kids certainly love where they live. The other evening, our eldest said, she wants to buy our house when she's older. I decided not to outline the details of inheritance. Because I'd rather encourage that hard working spirit, to achieve important goals. ;)

    1. Glad to report from the happy traveler, that all went well. A few minor hiccups, but he's still looking forward to catching the bus tomorrow. I can only hope, this continues. :)

  6. I'm sure he will love having so many other children around him, but for you it will always be a tough call to let him go.

    1. Actually, he's made some really lovely friends. He's greeted with hugs, as they cheerfully announce his name. Not bad, for a kid who struggles to pronounce his words. I guess a smile, is the universal language though. ;)

I'm fortunate he has such a lovely group of class mates. It makes it a little easier to let him go.

  7. Nooo, the baby ?.?? He looks so little and cute. Good to hear he has coped ok so far, he will be tired to the point of falling asleep at the table some nights,my kids did the country school bus thing too and I would have part of dinner ready to eat when they got home very hungry.....long bus route.
My youngest used to go to Kindy a few days a week on the school bus and the big kids saved the long seat up the back so she could go to sleep on the way home....long days indeed .
Its amazing how quickly they adapt and fit in but the end of day tiredness takes a while to level out and usually they do catch up on the weekends.
Good luck with your new normal, you do tend to rattle around at a loose end for a while till you get used to just your own company.

    1. That was so nice of the older kids, to watch out for the younger ones, on the bus trip home. It offers a bit of solace, for what is a big ask for someone so young.

Unfortunately, my son is the original Energiser Bunny. I hoped it would tire him out, but he just keeps going! I should count myself lucky, he has energy to spare. :)
